Four Tips From Christian On How to Overcome Temptation

John Bunyan, born in 1628 in England, is the author of Pilgrims Progress, a book he wrote during 12 years in prison for preaching without a license. Pilgrim’s progress is the second most popular book in the world history, after the Bible. Through it, thousands have found the Lord and been converted. It is my prayer that you will be among those thousands through the ministry of “There Is Hope,” as we gather lessons weekly from each chapter.

A prudent person is someone who is careful and avoids unnecessary risks.

Prudence, in chapter five asked wise questions to Christian for herself, and that is something I admire about her.

"Can you remember how at times these agitating thoughts seem to be conquered?" asked Prudence.

Replied Christian, "Yes, when I remember what I saw at the Cross, that will do it;  and when I gaze at this embroidered Coat, that will do it; and when I read the Scroll that I carry close to my heart, that will do it; and when I meditate about where I am going, that will do it."

Prudence asked Christian, how he had overcome sins that were normal to him as it is natural to blink. Christian replied, giving her four things that strengthens him not to yield.

  1. He meditates on the Cross.

At the cross we see Gods love for us. Ellen G. White wrote, “He who beholds the Saviour’s matchless love will be elevated in thought, purified in heart, transformed in character.” (The Desire of Ages, p. 661).

I have never read a quotation that shows God’s love for me clearly than this statement by Ellen White, “One soul is of such value that, in comparison with it, worlds sink into insignificance. ” (Desires Of Ages 577.3) That is how much you matter to God, more than the billions of worlds we know nothing about.

  1. He remembers the garment he was given at the Cross

After Christian reached the cross, and saw Jesus crucified for his sins, tears welled up in his eyes and poured down his cheeks.

In the book of Zechariah 3, Johsua stands before the Lord, but he is resisted by the devil. When Satan sees that God is about to forgive someone, He does everything he can to resist them, but once God forgives a sinner, He clothes them with a holy garment no one can take off but themselves.

  1. He reads the promises of God.

The third action that helps Christian to become a conqueror is that He reads his Bible, in it contains sweet promises to support him with whatever situation he is in.

  1. He keeps his mind on where he is going.

Lastly, what helps Christian not to turn back, he thinks on where he is going.
